River Runs Through It: Finishing without a binding demonstration NiYa Costley

Join NiYa for a demo on adding a facing and a sleeve to the back of your quilt. No supplies are needed as this workshop will be a demo only. NiYa will demonstrate how to add a facing, sleeve, and a label. NiYa will also demonstrate how to finish a quilt using the pillowcase method.

Copyright & Intellectual Property Workshop
Presented by Peggy Miller, Esq.
Protecting Creativity in Our Quilting Community
Join us following the August meeting for a practical conversation about copyright and intellectual property, what they protect, how they affect quilting and guild activities, and how we can respect the work of other creators while protecting our own.
We’ll Discuss
What copyright and intellectual property mean
The difference between Creative Commons, educational use, commercial use, and infringement
Why material found online is not automatically free to copy, share, or sell
Using images, patterns, and text created by someone else, including making products from downloaded designs
Properly purchasing and using quilt patterns: one purchased pattern does not authorize making copies for others
Copyright considerations for quilts, raffle projects, and reproducing text on quilts
Practical steps for documenting and protecting your own original designs
Questions about AI-generated content: ownership, use, and responsibility
Bring Your Questions
This workshop is designed to help guild members make informed, respectful choices about creative work. Bring your questions and real-world examples for discussion.

Challenge 3: A River Runs Through It
A River Runs Through It invites Uhuru members into a bold, collaborative adventure where creativity flows as freely as water itself. Each quilt becomes a living segment of a larger, ever‑moving river—entering and exiting at the same height, shifting in width, and carrying the energy of mountains, cities, farms, or imagined worlds. When these pieces hang side by side, they transform into one powerful, continuous current of color, story, and artistry, showcasing the collective vision of a community stitched together by imagination and flow.
The guild will provide the river fabric to everyone who is interested in participating. Everyone who participates will create a wall hanging that incorporates your personal idea of a river. It can be modern, abstract, a cityscape, mountains, art nouveau, a landscape...What will you create?
Uhuru will host workshops to assist with planning, design, and finishing techniques for anyone who is interested. Quilts will be due at the November Guild Meeting. Your quilt will be 18 inches wide x 24 inches in height and will incorporate the provided river fabric in your design. v

If you are signed up to participate in the Technique Workshop after the meeting please bring with you the following items:
a sandwich to quart size bag of light, medium, and dark scraps in neutrals, blues, orange, purple, red pink, and/or greens (smallest width for scraps is 2 inches shortest length you want is 4 inches) Fabric will be used for mountains, beaches, islands and other land/water features so you do not want anything with large prints. Sunsets are also possible. Tiny prints and tone on tones are perfect.
an 8x4 inch piece of either sky, or sand colored fabric
a 9x12 inch piece of muslin or white fabric for the background (you will be covering this in varying stages so you don't want a print for this as it might show through your other fabrics)
