Challenge Show and Tell: Honoring Nikki Giovanni, due Saturday, January 17, 2026
Our final challenge of the year will honor African American poet, author, activist, and educator, Nikki Giovanni. For this challenge, you can create a quilt of any size using any technique, and we encourage you to explore resources about her life as well as her work. To help you meet this challenge, Uhuru will provide education and support throughout the year. Please remember to adhere to all copyright laws when choosing elements for your quilt.
The final quilts for this challenge could be used for Uhuru’s participation in Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026. See Renee Anderson for more details about our involvement with this program.
Education Workshop : Transforming Everyday Materials into Textiles
This workshop, immediately following the regular guild meeting, introduces participants to the exciting process of turning ordinary paper into fabric-like material that can be stitched, quilted, or used in mixed-media projects. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will learn techniques for strengthening paper, adding texture, and integrating it into creative projects. At the end, attendees will leave with a sample sheet of handmade paper-fabric and ideas for how to use it in quilting, book arts, or wearable art.
Members bring the following supplies: 2-inch chip brush, cheesecloth 12x12 and/or 12x12 muslin
OPTIONAL (if in your stash): misty fuse, paper cocktail napkins, mulberry paper, rice paper, tissue paper colored or decorative is fine.
